Resolution A

Resolution 1 - Not disband Walter Taylor South Action Group Inc. (WTSAG).

To consider and, if thought fit, to pass the following resolution as a special resolution:
(a) Walter Taylor South Action Group Inc. is not disbanded; and
(b) it changes its objects to suit current challenges and needs for the area; and
(c) it changes its name to something which better describes the area it covers and the work that it does."

Resolutions B

Resolution 1 - Close Down Walter Taylor South Action Group Inc. (WTSAG)

To consider and, if thought fit, to pass the following resolution as a special resolution:
"Close down Walter Taylor South Action Group Inc. (WTSAG) and to proceed with application for cancellation of WTSAG."

Resolution 2 - Walter Taylor South Action Group Inc (WTSAG) remaining assets distribution

To consider and, if thought fit, to pass the following resolution as a special resolution:
"Walter Taylor South Action Group Inc. (WTSAG) remaining surplus assets be distributed to Friends of Oxley Creek Common Inc., an incorporated association, with similar views and location to WTSAG."

Sorry I will be unable to attend the meeting so here are written submissions.

Every local area needs an amenity group to monitor things which can affect planning or amenity in the area and to help to represent those who live and work in the area.

If resolution B is passed the Walter Taylor South Action Group Inc (WTSAG) would be disbanded.  This would be a shame because WTSAG has a number of excellent members and officers with considerable experience, and an excellent website.  It has a valuable structure therefore, which would be lost if it were disbanded.

Therefore I propose that WTSAG:

  1. is not disbanded; and
  2. changes its objects to suit current challenges and needs for the area; and
  3. changes its name to something which better describes the area it covers and the work that it does.

Old objects

The current WTSAG objects are:

“In the area of Sherwood-Graceville Neighbourhood Plan, to take such actions as may be necessary to:

  1. protect, promote and preserve the Queenslander style housing in the area
  2. protect and preserve the architecture, character, amenity and streetscape of the area
  3. assist and promote appropriate town planning in the area”

Proposed objects

I put this out for debate: that the objects are changed to:

“To monitor things which can affect planning or amenity in the area of the Sherwood-Graceville Neighbourhood Plan and to help to represent those who live and work in the area in respect of those things.”

Proposed name

The area of the Sherwood-Graceville Neighbourhood plan is the whole peninsula from the Brisbane River at north Chelmer down to Cliveden Avenue to the south.  On the western side it is bounded by Fort Road.  On the eastern side it takes in King Arthur Terrace and is bounded by Oxley Creek.

I believe the name “Walter Taylor South Action Group” does not properly describe this area or the existing or proposed objects of the association, and this has held back the association in the past.

I think a better name would be the “Sherwood Peninsula Amenity Group”.

Dear Allan and all WTSAG members,

While I am to a financial member, I did join this group some years ago when “fighting’ to limit the over development of my immediate adjoining land, the Alan Fletcher Reserve, now Arbour Reach. (“Arbour” being somewhat ironic seeing as only one tree of the original 90+ trees planned for preservation has survived).

Thanks for the invite to contribute, and technically you might be hard pressed to attract a quorum to pass Resolution B, to close down WTSAG, (so I may come to make up the numbers)

On receipt of your email, I did a quick scan of your website, the last newsletter 2018, and the last Forum post was over 2 years ago? A clear qed, WTSAG is serving little purpose, pass resolution B and donate any remaining funds to a local organisation that is serving the community, eg the Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre or the Graceville Croquet club!

For better or worse, politics has changed and the vehicles for communications have changed, isolated action groups, however well meaning and well managed (and yes, WTSAG does have a good website) were once influential but such influence has greatly diluted - it has all moved to social media, and unfortunately this gives a loud voice to the less logical.

One thing that that has not changed for the worse is the importance of being involved from the inside. To quote an old management mantra (which originates from the military as I recall) “It is better to be on the inside of the tent throwing stuff out, than to be outside the tent throwing stuff in” (I had to clean that one up a bit for a politically correct audience), so become involved with your local political branch, any branch, the brand matters little. Would Nicole recognise you and greet you with your first name when you pass in the street?

Compare WTSAG with a couple of random local Facebook groups as below. All the local political aspirants are members, watchers or contributors. They even watch, follow and comment on my local running group Facebook page, if you are an cyclist follow Mark Bailey on Strava.

On the topic of local Polies, Mark and Graham hosted coffee at Hunter and Scout last Friday, I was there for 15 minutes between 12 and 12:15 - there was one other member of the public present!  I had more “influence” in that 15 minutes than WTSAG has has in the past 15 months?? ITS OUR OWN FAULT!!
